Historical Perspective

For nearly 200 years, Canal Street has served as a principal thoroughfare of New Orleans. When the city was sold by France to the United States in 1803, it was the dividing line between the Creole culture of the French Quarter and “downtown” side, and the newly-arrived, and unwelcome Americans on the “uptown” side of the street.

Public transit was provided by mule-drawn cars by the mid-1800s, and by the turn of the 20th century, more than 200 miles of street railway crisscrossed the city. By the 1920s more than a dozen streetcar lines terminated on Canal Street; however, about the same time, streetcar lines were being dismantled and replaced with bus service. In 1964, the Canal line was converted to bus service, leaving only the historic St. Charles Streetcar line in operation.

Twenty years later, people began to recognize their folly, and the Regional Transit Authority, in a public private partnership with the Riverfront Transit Coalition Group, introduced the Riverfront Streetcar line, which has exceeded ridership estimates since the beginning. In the early 1990s studies of the feasibility of returning streetcar service to Canal Street began, and by 1997, a plan was in place. The Canal Streetcar Project is currently in the final design phase, with construction on special track work to begin by January, 2001

The RTA offers two types of VisiTour Passes:
1 DAY - $5.00
3 DAY - $12.00

To validate your pass, scratch off the month and day(s) you will be using it. On the three-day pass, make sure you select consecutive days. Your VisiTour Pass is not good until you validate it. If you are not familiar with the transit system, you can get rider assistance by calling RTA's RideLine at 248-3900. The RTA information specialists will need to know where you are (including the address, if possible), where you want to go and what time you want to leave. The specialist will tell you the location of the nearest stop, the approximate time of the next trip, and any connections necessary to get to your destination.
Be sure to look in the centerfold of WHERE Magazine for the RTA VisiTour Guide to New Orleans. This colorful map highlights attractions all around the city that are accessible via the VisiTour lines. WHERE Magazine is available free from your hotel. Ask for a copy at the information desk.

The VisiTour Pass is sold through information counters at hotels and retail centers. Please call RTA RideLine at 248-3900 for the distributor nearest you.

* VisiTour Passes are valid only on RTA service in the city of New Orleans/Orleans Parish
