For nearly 200 years, Canal Street has served as a principal thoroughfare of New Orleans. When the city was sold by France to the United States in 1803, it was the dividing line between the Creole culture of the French Quarter and “downtown” side, and the newly-arrived, and unwelcome Americans on the “uptown” side of the street.
Public transit was provided by mule-drawn cars by the mid-1800s, and by the turn of the 20th century, more than 200 miles of street railway crisscrossed the city. By the 1920s more than a dozen streetcar lines terminated on Canal Street; however, about the same time, streetcar lines were being dismantled and replaced with bus service. In 1964, the Canal line was converted to bus service, leaving only the historic St. Charles Streetcar line in operation.
Twenty years later, people began to recognize their folly, and the Regional Transit Authority, in a public private partnership with the Riverfront Transit Coalition Group, introduced the Riverfront Streetcar line, which has exceeded ridership estimates since the beginning. In the early 1990s studies of the feasibility of returning streetcar service to Canal Street began, and by 1997, a plan was in place.
